In a city impacting movement, the public initiative plays a vital role. In the past, too much of the weight of the citywide movement was placed on the “united gathering” or event. To do away with public events completely, though, in lieu of some more stealth version of dispersed unity is too high-minded for it’s own good – there needs to be both. When we mobilize together in service, prayer, public praise, festival celebration, or other ways, a few things happen.

ONE - The unchurched take note that a supernatural thing is occurring and overflowing into the streets of the town, they observe us working together to bring His grace to the public places and truly enjoying the celebration of our oneness in Christ.

TWO - it allows those of us who are moving forward in one accord to hear and see what our hearts are hungry for happening right before our eyes. The encouragement of filling a downtown area, or covering the map with prayer tents, or filling the air waves with a radio or TV prayer initiative, walking multiple campuses and the like, is real. When people know that the movement of community transformation is in crescendo, and they can savor it in realtime, it annihilates doubt and causes faith to rise to new levels.

Taking what has been inside the Church for so long and unleashing it in the public places has received overwhelming responses. People have been saved, darkness has been knocked back, Christians have been encouraged, practical unity has been demonstrated as plausible and the city has responded favorably. Some of the initiatives include: prayer tents spanning the entire community at once; radio broadcasts; TV shows which link campus prayer walkers across town; worship in the parks, open air street corners and even opening night community soccer events; prayer luncheons for community leaders and officials; parade floats in the Christmas extravaganza; festivals downtown; service and clean up days; marches; National Day of Prayer and Global Day of Prayer gatherings, etc.

John 17:18-23
“As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world…May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me…May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me…”
